Avondale Amateur Round 1 Wrap

Avondale Member Jye Pickin leads the Men’s Field in the Avondale Amateur after Tuesday’s first round.
Pickin was out first group, and took advantage of perfect scoring conditions to post a 5 under par round of 66. The reigning NSW Junior Champion and Avondale Club Champion used his local knowledge to reel off 7 birdies, with his only bogeys coming at the long 3rd and tough 458m Par 4 16th.
In a three way tie 1 stroke off the pace are two Melbournians who were also out early, Andre Lautee from Kingston Heath and Aiden Didone from Metropolitan. Thomas Heaton from The Australian matched them with 67 in the more difficult afternoon conditions, with gusty winds prevailing over the Northern Sydney layout.

In the Women’s event, scoring was more difficult with three players carding a 1 under par 71. Sixteen year old prodigy Hye Park from Royal Pines leads the way alongside South Korean Seunghui Bong. Emily Toy from England rounds out the trio on one under par, with her round featuring 6 birdies amid a smattering of dropped shots.
The Australian charge is lead by local Grace Kim, who followed her recent runner-up finish in the NSW Amateur with an opening 73. Kim sits alongside Australian Master of the Amateurs Stephanie Kyriacou from St Michael’s. Eighteen year old South Korean Kumkang Park rounds out the top 6 also on 71.

Those who played in the Thursday afternoon breeze will be looking to take advantage of benign conditions early Friday.
